Purpose:
To evaluate the long term results of visual acuity and quality in myopic patients with a thin cornea who received photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)
Methods:
In this before-after interventional study, thirty myopic eyes with a myopia -3.76±1.72 (-6.50 to -1.25)D and a minimal corneal thickness of 486.03±11.93 (452 to 499)µm underwent PRK. In myopia was more than 4D, mitomycin C was used adjuvant PRK. The surgery was performed with an excimer laser (VISX STAR, Abbott Medical Optics, Abbott Park, US).
Results:
After 3 years, the uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity were improved 1.01±0.04 (P<0.001) and 0.01±0.03 (P=0.995), respectively. Manifest refraction spherical equivalent was decreased -0.08±0.16D (P<0.001). Mesopic contrast sensitivity showed any significant changes in all spatial frequencies. Total coma (P<0.001), spherical aberration (P<0.001), and total higher order aberrations (P<0.001) also showed a significant increase.
Conclusion:
: In patients with corneal thickness less than 500 µm, PRK or PRK-MMC is a safe, effective, and predictable procedure with no effects on visual function in mesopic condition.
