Purpose:
To evaluate the effect of fasting and rehydration in Ramadan on ocular biometric indices
Methods:
Forty four eyes of 44 young healthy volunteers with mean age of 35.40 ± 6.13 years were enrolled in this cross sectional study. Randomly, the right eye of all persons was selected for analysis. Ocular biometric indices of all volunteers were checked 1 hour before Iftar (~16 hours of fasting) and 1 hour after Iftar (drinking water at least 1% of body weight) using commercial available machine (LENSTAR LS900, Haag-Streit, Bern, Switzerland).
Results:
Thirty-one persons were male. Visual acuity of all persons was 20/20. There were no significant acute changes after rehydration compared to fasting regarding central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth and axial length (p> 0.05). Lens thickness increased significantly after rehydration. Mean lens thickness in fasting was 3.8979 ± 0.3958 millimeter which increased to 3.9487 ± 0.3642 millimeter 1 hour after rehydration (p=0.026).
Conclusion:
There is an acute change in lens thickness in rehydration after long-lasting dehydration. This may be considered in patients with anterior segment problems especially in patients with angle closure glaucoma.
