Purpose:
To describe a case of bilateral multiple serous retinal detachments( SRD) following bone marrow transplantation (BMT) which responded bilaterally to one session of unilateral intravitreal bevacizumab injection significantly.
Methods:
Retrospective evaluation of the patient medical records
Results:
A 37 year- old – man who was complaining of gradually decreasing vision of both eyes since 3 months ago was referred to our clinic. He had a history of BMT for acute myelogenic leukemia (AML) about 4 months ago. At funduscopy there was multiple serous retinal detachments (SRD) bilaterally. With the diagnosis of multiple central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) , he was advised to lower the steroid dosage which did not make significant improvement; so intravitreal bavacizumab injected in the worse eye, which resulted in significant improvement bilaterally.
Conclusion:
Serous retinal detachment is a rare complication following BMT. Significant bilateral improvement after single session unilateral intravitreal bevacizumab injection shows not only the possible role of increased level of vascular endothelial growth factor ( VEGF ) in this case, but also the systemic diffusion of the drug and contra lateral eye effect following unilateral injection.
