Purpose:
To compare peripapillary choroidal thickness (PCT), macular thickness, and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness between the unaffected eyes of patients with unilateral nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and their affected eyes and the eyes of normal control subjects.
Design: prospective comparative study.
Methods:
Optic disc area,PCT, macular thickness, and RNFL thickness were evaluated in both eyes of patients with unilateral NAION and in right eye of the normal control subjects.
Results:
The mean optic disc area in NAION eyes and their unaffected fellow eyes were significantly smaller from normal control disc area measurements.
Average PCT were significantly greater in the NAION eyes and unaffected fellow eyes than in the control eyes (ANOVA, P=0.01). In the all subjects, optic disc area was correlated with average PCT (r = −0.33, P = 0.002). In addition, RNFL thickness and macular thickness values were significantly lesser in all sectors in the NAION eyes than in the unaffected fellow eyes and control eyes, P < 0.000).
Conclusion:
A comparison of the eyes with NAION and their fellow eyes with normal control subjects indicated that the peripapillary choroidal thickness was Larger in the former than in the latter, suggesting its contribution in NAION.
