Purpose:
To compare the changes of prepapaillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness between mild to moderate pre-eclampsia, sever pre-eclampsia and eclampsia with normal pregnants by using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Methods:
: In a prospective comparative case series, 151 cases (302 eyes) evaluated. Changes of prepapaillary RNFL thickness in 44 cases (88 eyes) with mild to moderate pre-eclampsia, 35 cases (88 eyes) sever pre-eclampsia and eclampsia 12 eyes, 70 cases (140 eyes) normal pregnants compared with each other between groups after 20 weeks of pregnancy and 2-6 months after delivery by OCT.
Results:
Mean prepapaillary RNFL thickness was 106 ± 9 mμ, 104 ± 10 mμ, 104 ± 23 mμ in normal, mild and sevre cases respectively. After delivery changed to 103 ± 9 mμ , 101 ± 10 mμ, 96 ± 10 mμ respectively. These changes are statistically significant in all groups (p<0.001). But more changes occurred in sever cases.
Conclusion:
Prepapaillary RNFL thickness decreases in pregnancy induced hypertension patients. But changes are sever in eclampsia patients.
