Purpose:
To evaluate the Role of Visual evoked potential in the assessment of post traumatic visual symptoms
Methods:
From January 2013 to January 2014, all the referred patients who were complaining of decreased visual acuity ( VA ) following head trauma were included. The exclusion criteria were the cases with clinically obvious reason for blurred vision, like hazy media due to cataract or vitreous hemorrhage, and other neurologic diseases which may explain for the decreased bets corrected visual acuity (BCVA). If the patient BCVA was not enough for pattern VEP, then flash VEP was performed
Results:
This study included 34 patients, from whom 9 (26.4%)patients had complaints in both eyes. Mean age of patients was 34.3 ± 13.76 years. In unilateral involvement , a significant differences was found between two eyesin both lobes the implicit times had increased and the amplitudes was decreased. The RAPD and BCVA were significantly correlated with VEP amplitude and implicit time
Conclusion:
VEP is an invaluable test is assessing the patients complaining of visual acuity but otherwise normal ophthalmic examinations
