Purpose:
To explore the influence of glaucoma disease on the retinal vascular geometry.
Methods:
In this institutional study retinal photographs were taken from 30 cases of normal population and 30 glaucoma patients. The retinal arterial branching angles were quantified for each subject by means of Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Results:
The first branch mean of the right (P = 0.004) and left eyes (P = 0.02) were significantly narrower in the glaucoma group. The second branch mean of the right eyes (P = 0.016) was significantly narrower in the glaucoma group, too. But, the second branch mean of the left eyes (P = 0.057) was not statistically significantly different between the normal and glaucoma groups. The first branch mean of the right eye was statistically correlated with intraocular pressure in the glaucoma group (P = 0.034, Pearson correlation = -0.408). The other retinal arterial branching angles were statistically correlated with intraocular pressure neither in the normal group nor in the glaucoma group (P > 0.05).
Conclusion:
The existence of these differences gives us a potential use for this analysis method as a novel diagnostic method for diagnosis of glaucoma.
