Purpose:

To compare Schirmerʹs and tear break-up time (TBUT) values and conjunctival impression cytology results in different quadrants between the eyes with unilateral pterygium and contralateral eyes.

Methods:

57 consecutive patients diagnosed with unilateral pterygium were included. Schirmerʹs test without anesthesia and TBUT were performed for both eyes. Impression cytology samples were taken from the superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal bulbar quadrants of both eyes. The goblet cell density (GCD) was calculated for each quadrant of the conjunctiva. The degree of squamous metaplasia was evaluated by severity score.

Results:

The medians of Schirmer?s test and TBUT and the medians of GCD and squamous metaplasia severity score in each quadrant had no significant differences between the eyes with and without pterygium. Superior quadrants showed the lowest and nasal and temporal quadrants showed the highest median of squamous metaplasia severity score.

Conclusion:

: In the patients with unilateral pterygium, aqueous and mucin tear deficiency and their associated findings in impression cytology (squamous metaplasia and decrease in GCD) might involve both eyes with and without pterygium. Thus, other factors might cause pterygium in only one eye. In both eyes with and without pterygium, the severity of squamous metaplasia was determined by the degree of exposure to environmental insults.
