Purpose:
To compare of the improvement in the symptoms of complex congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) between the patients that underwent monocanalicular and bicanalicular intubation.
Methods:
99 patients with complex CNLDO underwent monocanalicular (Monoka) or bicanalicular (Crawford) intubation. The proportion of the improvement in CNLDO symptoms were compared between two groups. In each group, the correlation of the age, gender, history of probing, and the presence of purulent discharges with the improvement in CNLDO symptoms were evaluated.
Results:
52 cases in the Monoka and 47 cases in the Crawford group) were included. 48 patients (48.5%) had history of probing. 26 patients (26.3%) had purulent discharges. The patients in the Monoka group had significantly lower proportion of complete improvement (59.6%) than the patients in the Crawford group (85.1%, p=0.005). In the Monoka group, the presence of the purulent discharges (p=0.03) and age of the patients (p=0.06) were significantly correlated with the complete improvement. But in the Crawford group, none of the factors were significantly correlated with the complete improvement.
Conclusion:
Bicanalicular intubation may be a better treatment for the patients with complex CNLDO. In the patients undergoing monocanalicular intubation, the presence of the pus and lower age of the patients could increase the success.
