Purpose:
To compare central corneal thickness(CCT) and corneal endothelial cell density in subjects with Primary Open Angle and Pseudoexfoliative Glaucoma
Methods:
This was a comparative, descriptive study. Ultrasound pachymetry and specular microscopy was performed in 86 eyes with PEXG and 76 eyes with POAG of a total of 81 patients older than 40
Results:
Mean CCT was 522.93±39.05 µm in the PEXG group and 535.23±38.42 µm in the POAG group, which is significantly lower in PEXG eyes(p=0.045).Mean corneal endothelial density of eyes with PEXG and POAG were 2107.95±598.68 mm² and 2240.32±564.99 mm,respectively. Hexagonality was 56.52±11.32 in PEXG eyes and 56.75±12.12 in POAG eyesand CV was 33.94±7.55 in PEXG eyes and 33.14±6.33 in POAG eyes. There was no significant difference between any of the corneal endothelial cell density (P=0.151),Hexagonality (P=0.903) and CV (P=0.470) in PEXG and POAG eyes
Conclusion:
It seems that, regarding significant thinner cornea in patients with PEXG, to avoid wrong estimations of IOP, the evaluation of CCT should become a routine examination in these patients
