Purpose:
To determine the effect of 3 months vision therapy/orthoptics on visual acuity (VA), fusion and ocular alignment in 3-7 year old children.
Methods:
In this randomized clinical trial study, 80 children (age mean: 5.6±1.4 years) with amblyopia and/or non-paralytic horizontal deviations were randomly divided into case and control groups. For 3 months, cases were treated by different modalities of vision therapy/orthoptics included patch, red filter, sector patch, over minus lens, prism and synoptophore exercises. Controls were managed by patching for the same period. Pre and post-treatment VA, fusion, stereopsis and alignment were compared. Visual performance was classified as excellent (VA≥20/30, deviation ≤10pd and stereopsis≤70sec/are), acceptable (VA≥20/30, deviation≤10pd and stereopsis 70 to 3000sec/are) and unsatisfactory (VA<20/30, deviation> 10pd and no stereopsis).
Results:
Although more improvement of fusion and stereopsis were seen in the case group (p<0.001 for both), there was no significant difference in VA and alignment improvement compared with control group. The difference of visual performance was not significant between two groups, however the improvement was significant in each group (p<0.001, in both).
Conclusion:
Although vision therapy/orthoptics can be considered as an effective treatment for improving sensory status, there were not any differences of VA and alignment type between two groups.
