Purpose:
to compare the peripapilary NFL thickness after ILM peeling
Methods:
a prospective internventional case series was performed. Exclusion criteria was previous vitreoretinal intervention or concurrent diseases known to affect the peripapillary NFL thickness, like glaucoma. For all patient phacoemulsification (in phakic patients) and 23 guage pars plana deep vitrectomy with BBG assisted 2 disc diameter ILM peeling and SF6 tamponade was performed. Cases were followed for at least 6 months.
Results:
94 eyes from 93 patients entered the study. The mean age of patients was 65.3±8.9 years( range: 37-86). The baseline best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.8 LogMAR which improved significantly to 0.63 LogMAR at the final visit. The mean peripapillary NFL thickness was 88.75 at the baseline which did not change significantly at the final visit (75.75 microns, p=0.11). hole closure was achieved in 74 eyes (79%) . vitrectomy revision was performed in 4 case , 3 cases due to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and 1 patient due to endophthalmitis.
Conclusion:
BBG assisted 2 disc diameter ILM peeling with SF6 tamponade is an effective and safe method to close the full thickness macular holes
