Purpose:
To evaluate the disinfection properties of six multipurpose contact lens disinfection solutions available in Iran based on ISO 14729 guidelines.
Methods:
Six Multi-Purpose Solutions tested as: Renu MultiPlus (Bausch & Lomb ), Solo Care Aqua (CIBA vision) ,All-Clean soft (Avizor) , Contact All-in one Advanced (Zeiss) , Hippia (Interojo INC) , Ginza (Ginza PTE LTD) and 0.9% normal saline solution, were inoculated with standard strain of Staphylococcus aureus , Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ,Candida albicans and Fusarium solani. Surviving bacteria and fungi were quantified at specified times. An average log reduction in microbial numbers at the manufacturer’s minimum recommended disinfection time was determined and compared with the criteria for stand-alone disinfection products
Results:
Renu MultiPlus, Contact All-in one Advanced and All-Clean Soft were effective in achieving the mean 3.0 log reduction in bacterial count and 1.0 log reduction in fungal count, based on ISO 14729 stand-alone primary acceptance criteria. Solo Care Aqua failed to achieve the ISO 14729 stand-alone primary acceptance criteria for Candida albicans. The other solutions were not effective against all test microorganisms after specified times
Conclusion:
Generally, Renu MultiPlus, Contact All-in one Advanced and All-Clean Soft meet the ISO 14729 guidelines for stand-alone contact lens solutions
