Purpose:
To compare the efficacy and safety of photorefractive keratectomy(PRK) in eyes with and without previous retinal detachment(RD) surgery in the same patients.
Methods:
Eight patients with myopic refractive errors and previous Scleral buckling surgery in one eye were selected. PRK was performed in their both eyes. UCVA, BCVA, refractive error, central corneal thickness, and corneal power of all 16 eyes were obtained before and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the surgery. The eyes in group A(eyes with previous RD surgery) were compared with the eyes in group B(fellow eyes of the same patients).
Results:
There was not any intraoperative complication. All eyes had improved UCVA at 12 months after surgery. The difference of spherical equivalents(SE) between the groups wasn't statistically significant at 1 month after the surgery but became significant at 3, 6, and 12 months after the surgery. The mean changes in the SE between 1 and 12 months after the surgery was -1.4±0.51 and -0.6±0.39 diopter in group A and B, respectively (p = 0.023).
Conclusion:
PRK seems to be a safe and effective method for treatment of myopia in eyes with previous RD surgery. However, the amplitude of regression may be lower in eyes without previous RD surgery.
