Purpose:
To evaluate the effect of bevacizumab on posterior capsular opacification after lensectomy in congenital (pediatric) cataract.
Methods:
Four patients with bilateral congenital cataract aged between 4 and 18 years were included in this case series study. At the end of surgery, for each patient intracameral injection of 1.25 mg/0.05 ml bevacizumab was carried out through side port incision for one eye(ICB group). The other eye was injected intracamerally only with BSS(control group). Digital retroillumination image of the posterior capsule was obtained with standard photographic slit lamp apparatus 2 months, 6 months and 1 year post operation. Image processing of PCO was done using an Objective System Capsule Analysis(OSCA) of digital images. The results in the ICB and control groups were compared.
Results:
The average OSCA PCO scores of eyes in “ICB and control group” were “0.334265 and 0.708478” at 2 months, “0.737518 and 0.900675” at 6 months, and “0.824905 and 1.141338” at 1 year after the surgery. There was not statistically significant differences between the groups 2 months(p=0.07), 6 months(p=0.27), or 1 year(p=0.14) after the operation.
Conclusion:
Our results show that although the OSCA PCO scores were lower in ICB group, the differences between the groups was not significant statistically.
