Purpose:
To compare the incidence of acute symptomatic retinal detachment during Ramadan and other months
Methods:
In a retrospective study, datasheets of patients who were admitted for acute symptomatic retinal detachment between April 2003 and March 2008 were evaluated. Age of less than 13 years old, history of ocular surgery or trauma, any systemic disease causing a predisposition for retinal detachment and symptoms lasted for more than 7 days were among exclusion criteria.
Results:
416 patients included in the study. Ramadan accounted for 4 months of the 48-month study period. During Ramadan, 35 patients were admitted for retinal detachment surgery. There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to sex or age. There were no significant differences between the Ramadan and non-Ramadan groups with regard to sex or age. The mean refractive error of patients in the Ramadan group (-3.47 ± 3.87 diopters) was greater than that in the not-Ramadan group (-2.57 ± 1.02 diopters; p=0.024). There was no significant difference between two groups regarding the incidence of retinal detachment surgery (Mann-Whitney U test, p=0.39)
Conclusion:
The incidence of acute symptomatic retinal detachment did not differ during religious fasting in Ramadan and other months in age- and sex-matched groups.
