Purpose:

To assess the effects of prophylactic laser peripheral iridotomy on corneal endothelial cell density and cell morphology in primary angle closure suspects over a year follow up.

Methods:

In this prospective study, 34 PACS eyes underwent laser peripheral iridotomy at affiliated clinics of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. Following informed consent, specular microscopy was performed at the baseline and subsequently followed by 3-month, 6-month and over 12-month duration. Central, nasal and temporal endothelial cell count and morphology were assessed using non-contact specular microscopy.

Results:

The mean age of the cases was 53.4±7.9 years, and the majority of subjects were women (88.2%). The mean central corneal endothelial cell count prior to laser was 2528± 119.2 which altered to 2470±175.9, 2407± 69.02, and 2425±150.6 in 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month follow up respectively which did not reach to any statistical significant level. Alteration in the number of cells, coefficient of variation (CV) and hexagonality of cells in central, nasal, and temporal areas were not significant, as well.

Conclusion:

In PACS eyes, we did not find decline in corneal endothelial cell density and alteration in cell morphology including cell hexagonality and CV in central, nasal, and temporal quadrants in all of our subjects over a year follow up.
