Purpose:
To determine the efficacy of 5% povidone iodine (PVI) drops given for 15 minutes before phacoemulsification on conjunctival bacterial contamination load.
Methods:
This interventional cohort study includes 61 eyes (61 patients) undergoing cataract surgery. All patients receive 3 drops of 5% PVI into the conjunctival suck for 15 minutes. Specimens were obtained prior to and after the application of PVI. Standard aerobic and anaerobic media were used.
Results:
After PVI application a significant decrease in conjunctival bacterial contamination load was seen in 39 eyes (64%). In 13 eyes (21.3%) bacterial culture was negative before and after PVI application. In 9 eyes (14.7%) no decrease in bacterial load was seen.
Conclusion:
PVI application in the conjunctival suck for 15 minutes in is an effective method for decreasing conjunctival bacterial contamination load before phacoemulsification.
