Purpose:
Migraine is a common medical condition which usually causes a pounding, throbbing headache on one side of the head. It's not clear whether this condition is associated with visual problems in large studies and review of current literature shows controversies about that. This descriptive study established to clarify the frequency of visual and ophthalmic abnormalities in patients with migraine with and without aura.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study was performed on 50 referral migraineous patients aged 20-40 years old at Farshchian Hospital Hamadan, Iran. Comprehensive ophthalmic examination including contrast sensivity، automated Humphry perimetry performed and data analyzed with spss 15 software.
Results:
it was found that 64% of the patients had some kind of strabismus,73% had some kind of refractive error, ,16% had visual field abnormalities but with normal IOP, and remarkable association with crowded optic disc(50% had up to 0.1 of optic disc cupping) and normal contrast sensivity in digital visual chart.
Conclusion:
this study revealed some noteworthy ophthalmic findings in migraneous patients that deserve more studies in order to investigate any association of migraine with crowded disc, visual field defects, latent strabismus, and refractive errors ;and the potential role of them as headache trigger in this patients.
