Purpose:
Evaluation of the retinal redetachment rate, visual acuity (VA) and complications after silicone oil removal(SOR) in eyes that have undergone pars plana vitrectmy with silicone oil injection for treatment of advanced prolifrative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
Methods:
Fifty-eight eyes that have undergone pars plana vitrectomy and silicon oil injection and later SOR , between 2002 and 2008 ,with a mean follow-up 19±16.7 months were included in this retrospective review. Changes in VA , recurrent retinal detachment and incidence of complications are reported.
Results:
Retinal redatchment occurred in 15 eyes (25.9%). 42(76.4%) eyes underwent cataract surgery at the time of SOR. Mean duration of intraocular silicone oil tamponade was 8.3±7.9 months ,with a mean follow-up of 19±16.7 months .There were 7 eyes (12.1%)with V/A more than 20/200 before vitrectomy and 16 eyes(29.6%) after SOR .42 patients(76.4%) had visual improvment after SOR.Although there were no glaucoma cases before SOR,it was seen in 12 eyes (21.8%) after SOR.
Conclusion:
Retinal redatchment occurred in 25.9% after SOR. SOR resulted in vision improvement in PDR cases . The duration of the silicone oil tamponade had no significant effect on the reattachment rate . Glaucoma was seen in 12 eyes (21.8%).
