Purpose:
To evaluate the beneficial and safety of LASIK surgery.
Methods:
In this prospective study, 192 eyes from 121 individuals who are randomly selected from the patients with myopia, ranged from 0 to -14 D, and astigmatism, ranged from 2 to 7 D, referred to Aban Clinic of Isfahan have been evaluated. The patients underwent LASIK surgery usnig Bausch & Lomb microkeratom and Technolas 217 excimer laser. Postoperative changes in visual acuity and refraction were recorded during a one-year follow-up.
Results:
Mean spherical equivalent (SE) and cylinder before surgery were -5.3±1.5 D and 3.2±1 D, respectively. Following one year after surgery, mean SE and residual astigmatism were 0.5±0.8 D and 0.5±0.4 D, respectively. 78.2% of the patients with 2-3.5 D astigmatism, and 40.6% with more than 3.5 D astigmatism have less than 0.5 D astigmatism following one year after surgery. 41.6% of the patients have uncorrected visual acuity of 20/20 in the follow-up period. No visual threatening post-operative complications or postoperatively reduced vision has been observed.
Conclusion:
LASIK surgery seems to be a beneficial and safe surgical procedure for the correction of moderate to severe astigmatism accompanied by myopia.
