Purpose:
To evaluate the outcomes of scleral buckling (SB) in the treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD)associated with inferior breaks.
Methods:
Records of patients with RRD associated with inferior breaks managed by scleral buckling alone in eye department of Rasoul Akram Hospital between 2003 -2013 were reviewed . pre-operative information included demographics, macular involvement and visual acuity . After the operation visual acuity , retinal status and complications were recorded one week after the surgery and in the last follow up visit.
Results:
Fifty one eyes of 51 patients were studied . the mean follow up duration was 47.3 months ( 10 – 72 ). 43 ( 84.3% ) eyes has macula off detachment . The average preoperative log MAR visual acuity was 1.61 ± 0.51 ( 0.3 – 2 ) . In the last visit log MAR VA was improved to 1.11 ± 0.64 ( 0.1 – 2 )(P<0.0001) and anatomical attachment was observed in 43 ( 84.3% ) eyes.8(15.7%) eyes developed redetachment and were managed by vitrectomy .
Conclusion:
Sclera buckling is an effective and safe procedure for treatment of retinal detachment associated with inferior breaks.
