Purpose:
to compare outcomes between PDT and brachytherapy for circumscribed choroidal hemangioma
Methods:
This study is a retrospective interventional case series. The data used in this study were from the patients who underwent photodynamic therapy or brachytherapy for circumscribed choroidal hemangioma at Rsoul Akram Eye Institute, Tehran. 38 eyes of 38 patients from January 2006 to January 2014 were included.
Results:
From 38eyes,17 eyes underwent PDT while 21 eyes were treated by ruthenium 106 brachytherapyMean change in decimal BCVA in PDT group was 0.08 ± 0.33 and in brachytherapy group was 0.06± 0.07; the difference between two groups was not statistically significant. Mean changes of tumor thickness in PDT group was 1.08 ± 1.01 mm and in brachytherapy group was 2.28±1.24 mm. Mean changes of the greatest tumor linear dimension was 1.8 ± 1.30mm and 1.38±1.08 in PDT group and brachytherapy group respectively; thedifferences between two treatment group were not significant (P=0.53)
Conclusion:
PDT and is as effective and safe method as brachytherapy for treating symptomatic CCH. especially for small-size tumors.
