Purpose:
|
To evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of the azithromycin for the treatment of
sight-threatening ocular toxoplasmosis and to compare this modality with
trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole regimes
|
Methods:
|
Twenty seven patients with active toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis were
randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups in a clinical practice study: 14 patients were treated with
Azithromycin and 13 patients with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
|
Results:
|
The time to resolution of inflammatory activity, decrease in size of retinochoroidal lesions, and
optimal visual acuity did not differ between the two treatment groups,Lesion size declined significantly
over all patients (P= 0.001) patients in the azithromycin therapy group had a mean reduction in lesion size
of 24.2% and those in the trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole group demonstrated a mean reduction of 36.6%
There was no significant difference between the two treatment groups in terms of reduction in retinal lesion
size (P=0.17)
|
Conclusion:
|
Drug efficacy in terms of reduction in retinal lesion size and improvement in VA was
similar in a regimen of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and the azithromycin treatment, therefore Therapy
with azithromycin seems to be an acceptable alternative for the treatment of ocular toxoplasmosis.
