Purpose:
To evaluate refractive error changes of ROP patients treated with two different types of (Diode and Red) lasers.
Methods:
RCT, infants with threshold or prethreshold type 1 ROP were assigned to red or diode laser. GA, BW, pre- and post treatment refraction, stage of the disease, zone and disease severity characteristics were recorded.
Results:
150 eyes of 75 infants completed the study. 74 children received diode and 76 were treated using red laser. Mean GA and BW of infants were 28.6±3.2 weeks and 1441±491gr respectively. Mean baseline refractive error was +2.3±1.7 Diopter.
Post treatment refraction showed significant myopic shift (Mean: 2.6 D±2.0) with significant difference between two groups (P value < 0.001). Myopic shift was more among children with zone 1 and diode laser (mean: 6.00 D) and less among children with zone 2 and red laser (mean: 1.12 D). Linear regression model, using Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) method showed type of laser has a significant effect on myopic shift even after adjustment for other variables.
Conclusion:
Myopic shift is related to the type of laser and the involved zone.
