Purpose:
To compare peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with or without history of optic neuritis (ON) with a healthy control group.
Methods:
In this retrospective case control study 59 MS patients were recruited from neurology clinic of Imam hossein hospital. 36 patients had at least one episode of ON and 23 remainders had no history of ON. Control group included 30 healthy individuals. Peripapillary RNFL thickness was measured in all of them applying Stratus spectral domain OCT device.
Results:
Average RNFL thickness was significantly lower in patients with a history of ON compared to those without (86.6±11.81 μm vs. 95.04±11.29 μm, respectively; P<0.001). Both patients’ groups with or without ON had lower mean RNFL thickness than control group (105.83±8.32 μm; P<0.001). The most significant difference was observed in inferior and superior quadrants respectively .Within the patients with history of ON in one eye, mean RNFL thickness was 81.52 ± 12.31μm for affected versus 93.83 ± 10.46 μm for unaffected eyes and the difference was significant (P<0.001).
Conclusion:
Measuring RNFL may help in evaluating MS patients and estimating disease progression.
