Purpose:
To evaluate clinical outcomes of PRK in anisometropic children.
Methods:
12 children (Mean age 8.83+-1.3 years old) with anisometropic amblyopia resistant to conventional amblyopia treatments including glasses and contacts were included in 3 groups. Mean spherical equivalent was -5.67+_1.75, +5.75+-1.11, 2.25+-0.35 in myopic, hyperopic and astigmatic groups respectively.PRK was done in all children under Monitored anesthetic care(MAC). Amount of correction was considered as the amount that could correct anisometropia.
Results:
All of the patients in myopic and astigmatic groups and 70% of patients in hyperopic group acheived indended refraction postoperatively. There were significant increase in both UCVA and BCVA postoperatively. After 1 year,86% and 42% of patients have 1 and 3 lines increase in UCVA respectively. Also, similar changes was occured in BCVA in about 66,7% and 41% of patients respectively.Only one patient lost one line of BCVA after one year. There isn't any significant corneal haze in any group. The most significant results were achieved in astimatic group and the least responsive group is hyperopic patients. Streopsis was incresed from 341.67+-245 to 166+-87.52 second of arc postoperatively.
Conclusion:
PRK could be a safe and effective treatment modality in children with anisometropic amblyopia unresponsive to conventional treatments.
