Purpose:
To compare early traumatic cataract surgery with late surgery.
Methods:
Forty patients with traumatic cataract over 12-year –old were included in this prospective cohort study. Twenty cases underwent cataract surgery associated with intraocular lens (IOL) in the first week after trauma (primary procedure) and another twenty cases underwent cataract surgery and IOL implantation after one month (secondary procedure). Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), visual axis opacity (VAO), intraocular inflammation, IOL captures and displacements were measured at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery.
Results:
At the end of study ( 3 months ); BCVA was significantly better in the primary procedure group ( p< 0.05). , VAO and IOL captures were significantly higher in the secondary procedure group at one month and three months after surgery (p<0.05).
Conclusion:
Visual outcomes were significantly better in the primary procedure group. Considering these data and regarding cost, extended rehabilitation time and morbidity of the secondary procedure; primary procedure seems a wiser option than secondary procedure for traumatic cataract surgery.
