Purpose:
To compare visual acuity and quality between Femtosecond assisted thin flap LASIK and PRK with MMC in patients with myopia greater than 7D.
Methods:
In this nonrandomized comparative study, 60 patients (30 patients in each group) with high myopia were enrolled. The studied indices were assessed preoperatively and at 3 and 6 months after the operation.
Results:
The mean age of patients in the LASIK and PRK group was 28.60±7.8 and 27.14±5.63 (P=0.41). The preoperative spherical equivalent was similar between groups (8.65±1.51 in the LASIK and -8.04±1.70 in the PRK, p=0.149). 93.3% of patients in LASIK and 75.9% in the PRK group were within 0.5D of emmetropia. The significant improvement of UCVA was more prominent in the LASIK group (P=0.026). The change in the higher order aberrations was not significant between groups. Except for a decrease in the C18(cpd) in the LASIK group, There was not a significant change in contrast sensitivity at C3, C6, and C12 in the treatment groups.
Conclusion:
femtosecond assisted thin flap LASIK and PRK-MMC are both safe and effective for correction of high myopia. However the predictability of the procedure was better with the LASIK, while the change in total higher order aberrations was less in the PRK group.
