Purpose:
To compare the effect of nano formulation with marketed solution of ciprofloxacin for the treatment of pseudomona keratitis.
Methods:
Crosslinked poly (NIPAAm-MAA-VP) copolymer was used for preparation of ciprofloxacin-loaded nanoparticles. P. aeroginosa (ATCC: 9027) was used in 10 rabbit eyes(2 control,8 trial) under GA using ketamine and zylazin. In group A, nanodrug 1mg/ml and in group B 3mg/mL was used on the left eye. The positive control (right eyes) in both groups received aqueous solution of ciprofloxacin 0.03% made in laboratory.
Results:
The keratitis in starting control rabbits developed total wound extension over the study period.
reduction of ulcer area from day 7 to 14 was compared for three trial modalities. the efficacy of nanoformulation in its two concentrations didn’t differ in mild or moderate keratitis , whereas in severe cases, the high concentrated drug was more effective than conventional.
Conclusion:
Nanoformulation of ciprofloxacin is suitable for sustained topical drug delivery and a viable alternative to conventional eye drops for the treatment of pseudomona keratitis .
