Purpose:
To evaluate the effect of unilateral intravitreal Bevacizumab(IVB) injection on sustained intraocular pressure(IOP)
Methods:
A longitudinal study on 359 non-glaucomatous patients, who were candidate for unilateral IVB injection, was performed in Amir Almomenin (Rasht) & Shahid Dr Labbafinejad (Tehran) Hospitals. After obtaining a complete history and initial examination, IOP during the week and the day before injection (2 alternations), and on days one, seven and one month after injection (three alternations), were measured in the injected & sound eyes.
Results:
306 (42.2% man 57.8% woman ) patients undergoing unilateral IVB injection were eligible for the study [ 277 cases of diabetic retinopathy (90.5 %) , 20 cases of retinal vein occlusion (6.5%) , 9 cases of neovascular age related macular degeneration (2.9%) ]. In this study, 273 patients (89.21%) received less than 3 injections and 33 patients (10.79%) received equal to or more than three injections. No sustained increase in IOP was observed in injected and sound eyes. Also, no clinically significant association between sustained elevated IOP and gender, number of injection, and cause of injection was shown.
Conclusion:
IVB injection, in patients without a history of glaucoma does not lead to sustained increase in IOP.
