Purpose:
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potential cause for visual impairment in preterm infants. Following present recommendations, almost 1% of all newborn babies should therefore be screened and undergo at least one ophthalmologic examination.
Methods:
Sixty at risk preterm infants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group received scleral indentation during indirect ophthalmoscopy while the second one was subjected to RetCam technique. The score of the infants’ pain was checked by PIPP (premature infant pain profile) measure. Data were collected before, during, and following examination.
Results:
Before examination, there was no significant difference between the score of pain in both groups. Although the two groups both, demonstrated a rather high score of pain when lid speculum inserted, during the check-up process the first group showed a higher score of pain compared to the second group (mean PIPP1 score =12.6, mean PIPP2 score =11.2 respectively). During the post-examination phase, no significant difference in the score of pain was recorded among both groups.
Conclusion:
: Screening for (ROP) is a painful process. Scleral indentation during indirect ophthalmoscopy is more painful than RetCam .Efforts should be made to minimize the pain of examination.
