Purpose:
To describe the prevalence and risk factors of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Yazd population aged 50 years and more.
Methods:
In a population-based cross-sectional study a multi-stage random cluster sampling method was applied to choose eligible samples from Yazd district. Using a 45° digital camera Fundus photography, stereoscopic images were taken after and graded according to the modified Wisconsin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading System by three independent retina specialists.
Results:
Of 2320 eligible samples, 1178 people entered the study (response rate: 90.4%). Individuals aged 50 years and more (1178) were studied to determine the prevalence of AMD. 116 persons were diagnosed to have AMD (Prevalence:11.1%). The AMD prevalence was not statistically different among gender groups (P=0.889) but it was significantly associated with age (P<0.001)
Conclusion:
The age specific prevalence of AMD in the studied population is higher than that in Caucasian ethnic groups. Further studies are needed to assess the prevalence of AMD in other regions of Iran and its related risk factors.
