Purpose:
To measuring the prevalence of corneal astigmatism in patients before cataract surgery
Methods:
This is a cross sectional descriptive study on patients who had cataract surgery in Shahid Sadoughi hospital in the Yazd at 1390. Samples selected randomly and demographic data, routine ophthalmologic examination and preoperative biometry data were gathered. Data was analyzed by SPSS (ver. 16) using descriptive statistics.
Results:
As a result 385 patients were included. Most patients in this study were >=70 years old. 34% had no corneal astigmatism, 22/8 % had less than 1 D of corneal astigmatism, 12/9% had 1-1/5D, 21% had 1/5-2D, 9, 3% had more than 1D. Values showed a gradually increasing trend with increasing age.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, moderate corneal astigmatism (>1D) was found in a significant number of patients (43/ 1%) in the population tested and these patients may benefit from receiving a toric IOL. Although our study was limited by small numbers, the result give useful information to hospitals and clinicians when planning services and design protocols for the use of toric IOLs and to choose the type of toric IOL that would cover the range of astigmatism prevalent in the population.
