Purpose:
Lowering IOP in non-drainage scleral buckling (SB) is usually performed by repeated AC paracentesis. Due to the limited AC volume however, AC paracentesis is usually time consuming and sometimes inefficient. In this study, we present an alternative technique to address this drawback.
Methods:
In this pilot series, eyes with recent rhegmatogenous RD with PVR
Results:
14 eyes (11 phakic, 1 pseudophakic and 2 phakic artisan) were included. For 5, silicon buckle no: 276 and for 9, sponge 505 were used. Mean time of vitrectomy was 103 seconds and the mean total time of the surgery was 70.7 minutes. 12 eyes had an immediate retinal attachment and 2 during 3 weeks (100% total). One had vitreous leakage at the scleretomy site and one a tiny vitreous hemorrhage from the site postoperatively.
Conclusion:
Considering the acceptable anatomical outcome and safety observed in this small series, we would recommend doing small gauge limited vitrectomy instead of AC paracentesis to adjust IOP in SB procedure which is more convenient and time saving. However, this result should be confirmed in larger studies.
