Purpose:
Klotho is a new-discovered protein that presumably act an important role in aging process. The goal of this case-control research is finding the levels of Klotho and Endothelin-1 in plasma and aqueous in patients with Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome
Methods:
15 individuals with PES and 15 with only senile cataract as contorl group. sampling of aqueous and peripheral blood was used and all of the samples were analyzed using ELISA test to evaluate the levels of Endothelin-1 and Klotho.
Results:
Mean plasma levels of Klotho in PES were 56.32 ± 10.25 ng/ml, and in controls: 65.06 ± 12.32 ng/ml. mean aqueous levels of Klotho in PES were: 49.02±10.98 ng/ml, and in controls: 56.31 ± 7.68 ng/ml .Mean plasma levels of ET-1 in PES were: 1.66 ± 0.75 pg/ml, and in control: 1.16 ± 0.34 pg/ml. mean aqueous levels of ET-1 in PES were: 1.28±0.04 pg/ml, and in controls: 1.17±0.09 pg/ml. Plasma and aqueous levels of ET-1 in PES were significantly higher than the control group. Aqueous and plasma levesl of Klotho had negative correlation with pseudoexfoliation severity but Aqueous or plasma levels of ET-1 not
Conclusion:
Klotho significantly decreases in pseudoexfoliation but ET-1 has increased significantly. Klotho has stronger correlation with pseudoexfoliation severity than ET-1.
