Purpose:
to compare the results of using overcorrecting minus lens with orthoptic exercises in treatment of basic intermittent exotropia.
Methods:
fifty two children (28 male and 24 female) with 15-35 prism (mean 25 ∆) basic type of intermittent exotropia and mean age of 12 years (6-18 years) were divided in two groups of 26 cases. The first group of children treated with overcorrecting minus lens 1.5-2.5 diopters to achieve control of the manifest deviation, and the second group cases were treated by employing the orthoptic exercises. The results compared after six months follow up of the children.
Results:
Among the 26 children in first group who treated by overcorrecting minus lens 18 cases (69.23%) showed a successful outcome and decrease in angle of deviation, and amongst children who treated by orthoptic exercises, 16 cases (61.53%) had an adequate improvement in deviation.
Conclusion:
The results suggest that both Overminus therapy and orthoptic exercises are useful methods to primary control of intermittent exotropia, but there is not statistically a significant difference between outcomes of these two methods,(P>o.o5).
