Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Keraring 355º intrastromal corneal ring (ICR; Mediphacos, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) implantation aided by PocketMaker microkeratome (DIOPTEX GmbH, Austria for the treatment of central keratoconus.
Methods:
This study included 15 eyes of 15 patients (mean age, 28.87±6.94 years) with nipple-type keratoconus who underwent ICR implantation (KeraRing355°) using mechanical dissection with the PocketMaker microkeratome. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), refraction, topographic findings, safety, efficacy index and adverse events were reported at 3 months postoperatively.
Results:
At the 3-month follow-up visit, there was a statistically significant reduction in the spherical equivalent refractive error (-0.10 [2.4] postoperative versus -2.97[1.74] D preoperative, p=0.027). Mean UCVA (logMAR) improved from 0.8 (0.46) preoperatively to 0.41 (0.24) postoperatively (p=0.006), while mean BSCVA (logMAR) improved from 0.33 (0.18) to 0.29 (0.17, p=0.574).Additionally, the mean K reading decreased by 5.26 D (from 46.93 D to 41.67 D, p=0.001). No intraoperative and postoperative complications were demonstrated in this series of patients.
Conclusion:
The outcomes of the preliminary study show that the ICRS (KeraRing 355º) implantation is an efficient, cost-effective and minimally invasive procedure for improving visual acuity in nipple type keratoconic corneas.
