Purpose:
To evaluate results of a new keratoplasty technique for treatment of advanced pellucid marginal degeneration with severe inferior thining.
Methods:
The study is a prospective interventional case series. Seven patients with advanced pellucid marginal degeneration who had advanced inferior thinning and were intolerant to contact lenses underwent the procedure including intrastromal pocket creation in inferior thin cornea and insertion of donor stroma into the pocket. Preoperative and postoperative uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, Pentacam imaging and refraction were assessed preoperatively, after one month, 3 months, 6 months, and one year of operation.
Results:
Uncorrected distance visual acuity improved significantly after 3 months. Corrected distance visual acuity improved in a nonsignificant manner. Spherical equivalent refraction reduced nonsignificantly, but cylinder part of refraction reduced significantly. Mean postoperative spherical equivalent was ?2.1. No patients lost any Snellen acuity. No intraoperative and postoperative complications occurred.
Conclusion:
Lamellar Intrastromal Keratoplasty is a promising new treatment for advanced pellucid marginal degeneration.
