Purpose:
|
To evaluate the effect of intravitreal bevacizumab
as a surgical
adjunct in prevention of proliferative vitreoretino
pathy (PVR) after
retinal detachment surgery.
|
Methods:
|
In this controlled randomized
pilot study 27 patients with primary retinal detach
ment undergoing
pars plana deep vitrectomy were included of which 1
2 received
intravitreal bevacizumab at the end of procedure an
d at 3 and 6
months postoperatively anatomic success and BCVA wa
s compared to
control ones.
|
Results:
|
At three months follow- up in the IVB group, 3 of
11 eyes (27.3%) had detached retinas versus 6 of 12
(50.0%) in control
group (P= 0.40), and at six months follow-up, in th
e IVB group, 3 of 10
eyes (30%) had detached retina versus 3 in 8 (37.5%
) in control group
(P>0.99).The mean logMAR BCVA improved significantl
y in both groups
but did not show significant difference at three an
d six months follow-
up.
|
Conclusion:
|
Our results support additional studies to evaluate
the
effect of intravitreal bevacizumab on postoperative
PVR.
