Purpose:
To report the visual and refractive outcomes in corneas with pellucid marginal degeneration following MyoRing implantation (DIOPTEX GmbH).
Methods:
This study included 15 eyes of 14 patients, ranging in age from 22 to 49 years old with pellucid marginal degeneration. Intrastromal corneal ring (MyoRing) was inserted by means of mechanical dissection with the PocketMaker microkeratome. The main outcomes measures included: Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle- corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), manifest refraction and keratometry readings. The mean postoperative follow-up was 10 months.
Results:
The mean UCVA increased significantly from 1.13 ± 0.21 log MAR to 0.24 ± 0.13 log MAR whereas the mean BSCVA improved from 0.39 ± 0.12 to 0.19 ± 0.09 significantly(p< 0.001). The mean sphere and cylinder of manifest refraction decreased significantly by 3.21 and 3.70 diopter (D) respectively (p< 0.001). Furthermore in regard to corneal topography a significant corneal flattening of a mean value of 5.00 D was found (from 51 to 46 D, p< 0.001).
Conclusion:
MyoRing implantation by means of PocketMaker microkeratom, can reduce the corneal steepening and astigmatism associated with pellucid marginal degeneration. This procedure improved successfully visual and refractive outcomes.
