Purpose:
Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare event found in ophthalmologic outpatient visits. Bilateral involvement is even rarer. We report a rare case of bilateral CRAO after opium cosumption.
Methods:
A 65-year-old man developed an episode of sudden onset, painless reduced vision in the both eyes 10 minutes after administration of opium .He firstly noted a sudden decrease of visual acuity (VA) in his left eye three hours later, he presented with abrupt deterioration of the right eye. Visual examination revealed hand motion detection in his left eye and perception of light in the right one.
Results:
The interesting point about this patient is that he did not any other predisposing factor.
To the best of our knowledge, no opium-induced bilateral CRAO report has been published in the literature yet.
Conclusion:
Although the mechanism underlying opium remains unknown; more understanding is still needed to prevent the sequelae of this blinding situation.
