Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to compare the success rate of Masterka intubation versus probing for congrnital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) in children older than 18 month-old.
Methods:
In a prospective randomized clinical trial, 90 eyes with NLDO underwent either Masterka intubation (n = 45 eyes) or probing (n = 45 eyes). All procedures were performed by 1 oculoplastic surgeon. Tube removal was planned for 2 months postoperatively. Complete resolution was defined as the absence of clinical signs of CNLDO on examination and not having the parental history of residual symptoms of CNLDO at 6 months after procedure.
Results:
The mean age of treatment was 28 +/-18.2 months for Masterka and 26.7 +/- 18.6 months for probing group. Treatment success was achieved in 33 of 45 eyes (73.3%) in the Masterka group compared with 22 of 45 eyes (48.9%) in the probing group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p=0.017).
Conclusion:
Masterka intubation for treatment of CNLDO is more effective method in comparison to probing in children older than 18 month-old.
