Purpose:
To compare prepapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) between bipolar disorder and control groups by using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
Methods:
In a prospective comparative case series, prepapillary RNFLT of 60 eyes of thirty patients with bipolar disorder compared to 60 eyes from thirty age-matched healthy control subjects. By using OCT RNFLT of the 4 prepapillary quadrants and mean of them compared between two groups.
Results:
The mean RNFLT was 99 ± 8, 106 ± 8 mμ in the case and control groups respectively. This difference was statistically significant (p=0.001). In comparison of the mean RNFLTs of different quadrants in the case and control groups, inferior, superior, nasal quadrants were statistically significant (p<0.001) (0.040) (0.005), temporal quadrant was not reached to the significant level (p=0.907).
Conclusion:
This study showed RNFLT decreases in bipolar disorder. It may be as a possible marker of neurodegeneration, and can be used for detecting severity and duration of disorder.
