Purpose:
|
To evaluate the efficacy of Ru plaque brachytherapy for the treatment of retinoblastoma.
|
|
Methods:
|
We reviewed a retrospective, noncomparative case series of 28 children with retinoblastoma treated with Ru-plaques at Rsoul Akram Hospital between 2003 and 2012, with average 66.7 ± 23 months of follow-up.

Results:
|
A total of 33 tumors were treated with Ru brachytherapy in 33 eyes. The average patient age was27.4 ± 22 months. Ru brachytherapy was the first-line treatment for 2 tumors (6.1%), second-line treatment for14(42.4%)tumors, and salvage treatment for 17 (51.5%%) tumors resistant to
other treatment modalities..Eye retention was achieved in 54.5% of cases (18 of33 eyes).Radiation complications included mild vitreous haemorrhage in 3(9.1%),maculopathy in 2(6.1%), and subcap-sular cataract in 2(6.1%) of 33 eyes.

Conclusion:
|
RU brachytherapy is an effective treatment for retinoblastoma,with few secondary complications.
