Purpose:
To compare hydrophobic Acrylic IOLs with PMMA in children after Lensectomy, posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy for congenital cataract.
Methods:
This is a historical cohort study of patients with congenital cataract who were operated by a skilled surgeon in a private clinic between 1371 and 1391. Major outcomes and complications were early and final astigmatism, postoperative uveitis and visual axis opacification
Results:
67 eyes of 39 patients were included in the study. PMMA, Three- piece (Alcon MA60 ) and One – piece (Alcon SA60 ) were implanted in respectively 27, 22 and 18 eyes. The follow – up period was 101± 49, 74± 55 and 38±42 months for each group, respectively. BCVA was not significantly different between groups. (P= 0.823) Although early postoperative astigmatism was higher in PMMA group but in long term there was not any significant difference between three groups in term of wound- induced astigmatism. The rate of postoperative uveitis and visual axis opacification was the same in all groups.
Conclusion:
Although foldable Acrylic IOLs implanted in the bag are preferred IOL after lensectomy for congenital cataract, PMMA IOLs can still be a safe alternate for acrylic lens, especially when sulcus-fixation of IOL is scheduled.
