Purpose:
Cornea is one of the most sensitive parts of the eye and its thickness has a significant role in treatment protocols. Many factors including various diseases, genetic problems, environmental factors, geography, culture, ethnicity, as well as age can affect corneal thickness
Methods:
: Nonprobability sampling was used in this descriptive-observational study
Results:
From totally 252 subjects in this study, 144 were male and 108 were female. The subjects were from Persian and Baluchi ethnic groups with an equal number of 126. The mean thickness of cornea obtained in the southeast Iran was 536.3 32.656 μm which had a significant difference with the normal mean of corneal thickness throughout the world (545.5 μm) at the 5% error (p<0.0002). The difference between the mean corneal thickness of the age groups 20-30, 31-40, and 41-50 year was significant at the α=5% error level.
Conclusion:
This study demonstrated that the normal range of corneal thickness for the residents of southeast Iran was 528.08-539.7 at the 95% confidence level; which is lower than the normal range reported in the textbook of American Academy, 2007, as 537-554; this difference was significant at the 5% error level and may arise from the variety of ethnic groups with different life cultures.
