Purpose:
To determine the visual outcome in eyes undergoing primary aphakic artisan lens implantation due to complicated cataract surgery.
Methods:
Forty eyes from 40 patients undergoing primary artisan lens implantation were studied. Complete eye examinations were performed preoperatively and in the first day, first week, first month, three and six months postoperatively. Patients were followed-up for at least 6 months.
Results:
At final follow-up 81.8% of the eyes achieved best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) better than that measured pre-operatively, 9.1% of the eyes matched their pre-operative BSCVA and 9.1% of the eyes achieved BSCVA worse than that measured pre-operatively.
Conclusion:
This study suggests that despite the probable complications after primary artisan aphakia lens implantation, these lenses are beneficial to improve visual outcome in aphakic eyes.
