Purpose:
The primary aims of the present study were first accurately identifying the possible effects of macular edema and its functional changes in retina by using Mf-ERG test and its characteristics then evaluate any correlations between visual acuity, Mf-ERG parameters and central macular thickness.
Methods:
Fifty-three eyes from 30 patients with DME in non-proliferative phase were studied using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG). Correlation and regression analysis was performed between VA, macular thickness, mfERG amplitude and latency of N1,N2 and P1 waves in 3 concentric rings .
Results:
There were significant correlations between VA as a dependent variable, N2 (P=0,001, b=0.73) and P1 amplitude (P=0.001, b=0.84) in the central macular area but there was a borderline significance between VA and central macular thickness (CMT).(P=0.042, b= 0.392.Also, there was evidence for an inverse association of VA with N1 latency (P=0.012 and b= -0.551 ).
Conclusion:
The mfERG total amplitude is significantly correlate with VA even more than macular thickness so the combined use of OCT with mfERG is more beneficial for macular evaluation in DME patients to evaluate visual status.
