Purpose:
to evaluate the visual outcomes after implantation of a karma small-aperture corneal inlay under a LASIK flap or in a femtosecond intra-stromal pocket to treat presbyopia
Methods:
presbyopic patients had inlay implantation under a LASIK flap or into a corneal pocket created by a femtosecond laser at a depth of 200 um in the nondominant eye. Uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities, near visual acuity, and patient questionnaire on satisfaction, the use of reading glasses, and visual symptoms were evaluated
Results:
the study enrolled 8 eyes of 8 patients with a mean age of 58 Years (range 44 to 68 years). Mean UDVA improved 4 lines from 0.39 ± 0.24 at pre-op to 0.76 ± 0.32 at 3 months. CDVA remained unchanged from 0.96± 0.05 at pre-op to 0.89± 0.21 at 3 months post- op with 88% of patients achieving a CDVA of 20/20 at 3 months. One eye lost 2 or more lines of CDVA. Near visual acuity improved from Jaeger (J) 14 to J2 between pre-op and 3 months post –op (p<.05)
Conclusion:
Use of a small aperture inlay with or without simultaneous LASIK correction, successfully improved uncorrected near visual acuity without affecting distance visual acuity, resulting in less dependence on reading glasses
